A new majority female Birmingham City Council was sworn in today and quickly elected Wardine Alexander as president without opposition. 

“I’m thinking we bring a certain amount of compassion … and energy,” Alexander said of the five women now on the council.

“This has been a very exciting day for all of us,” she said.
